Breakout Rooms
Set up and manage smaller rooms during a meeting.
Breakout rooms divide participants into smaller discussions while the main meeting remains the parent room.
Availability
Only the Host or a Moderator can manage breakout rooms, and management controls are available from the main room. The feature must also be enabled for the meeting.
Set Up Rooms
- Open More and select Breakout Rooms.
- Choose the number of rooms and give each room a unique name.
- Assign eligible Attendees and Presenters to rooms.
- Review unassigned participants and room membership.
- Set an optional duration that fits within the remaining main-meeting time.
- Save the setup and start the breakout session.
Participants move to their assigned rooms as their connections complete.
Manage an Active Session
From the main room, a Host or Moderator can:
- View room membership and movement status
- Move one or more participants between active rooms
- Move participants back to the main room
- Enter an active breakout room
- Extend or update the timer
- Send a one-way broadcast to every active room
- Send a message to a specific room
- Close one room or all rooms
Close Rooms and Return
When a room closes, its participants return to the main room as their connections complete. Closing all rooms ends the breakout session and returns participants from every active room.
Keep the meeting open while a room move is in progress. Network interruptions can delay a transition, and a manager may need to retry a failed move.
Limits and Caveats
- Hosts and Moderators are not assigned as ordinary breakout participants; they manage from the main room and may enter rooms.
- Main-room-only management controls are hidden while the manager is inside a breakout room.
- Breakout controls may be difficult to use on small screens; use a supported desktop browser for setup and active management when possible.
